PUNE: Three people, including a couple from Mumbai, have been arrested and 176 fake currency notes of Rs 500 heavenly interdenominational missionary denomination seized from them. The Pune crime branch suspects the three are part of an inter-state racket involved in distributing fake currency in the city.

The arrested suspects are Suman Das (30), her husband Raju (35) of Sion, Mumbai and Arvind alias Mithusingh Karnavat (25), who is from Rajasthan and currently resides in Mumbai.

Acting on the tip-off, a trap was laid at a hotel on Laxmi road on Thursday from where Karnavat was nabbed. The police recovered 100 fake notes from him. "During interrogation, Karnavat revealed the names of the Das couple and informed the police that they had given him the money to distribute in Pune, " said inspector Ram Pathare, who led the team that made the arrest.

He said that another team, led by sub-inspector Dattatreya Survase, arrested the Das' in Mumbai on Friday. "We recovered 76 fake currency notes from them, " Pathare said.

Investigations have revealed that the suspects had already distributed the fake notes in Shirdi. They were produced in court on Friday and remanded to police custody till Agust 21.
